About the Mazzer Philos Single Dose Espresso Grinder

Mazzer is probably one of the most well known brands globally for commercial coffee grinders. Even non coffee drinkers might recall seeing their logo somewhere in a coffee shop!

Mazzer has introduced a single dose, home to light commercial espresso grinder. The Philos speaks of the same quality as their commercial range with an elegant design, sturdy materials (the grinder weighs 12.5kg!) and quality performance.

The Philos has a single dose hopper - something home coffee connoisseurs especially value. The hopper has a capacity of 60 grams only, bringing the total height of the grinder to 36.1cm, great to fit under tight cupboards. 

The adjustment ring is at the back of the grinder, so be aware if you want to place it under a cupboard with no or limited access at the back. Adjusting the ring is a breeze, and can be moved from stepless to stepped in a few easy steps.

Coffee beans go from the hopper into the auger (pre-breaker). The auger pre-cracks the coffee beans into smaller pieces and feeds them to the stainless steel 64mm burr set evenly, preventing clogging and providing a much more uniform grind. This makes the grinding process a bit longer than the standard grinder, but the benefits to this carries a bigger weight.

The Philos has two sets of 64mm flat burrs to chose from: I200D and I189D. I200D is multi purpose, known for flavour clarity, enhancing a pleasant acidity and fruity notes. The I189D on the other hand should be used if you want full-bodied extractions and a rich velvety mouthfeel. Easy to dial-in and great with medium-dark roasts.

The ground coffee drops into a magnetic dosing cup, which is very satisfying to use. The Philos has a knocker/clicker to remove any grounds in the chute, reducing retention. Remove the last bit of coffee with the "dose finisher" (included) from the chute.
